Introduction to the forklift's driving controls
The first thing to teach the trainees are the truck's driving controls. Normally this would be the direction control lever, the accelerator the brake and in the case of an I.C. engine powered truck, the inching pedal. Use of the parking brake should also be covered at this stage.
Some instructors during this session also teach the trainees limited use of the hoist and tilt levers. This is perhaps a good idea as it does enable the trainee to put the forks in the park and travel position during his steering practice.
It also makes sense at this point in time show the trainees all the various switches and warning lights that may be on that particular forklift truck.
Trainees should also be taught how to hold the steering wheel correctly and how to use the spinner knob if one is fitted.
