Negotiating a chicane - Unladen
Now is probably the best time to practice the chicane as trainees will have all of the skills necessary to do this. The clearances at all critical points should be around 75 mm, (3 ins). The middle section of the chicane should be long enough so as to provide two complete right angle turns.
This exercise should be practiced traveling both forwards and backwards and trainees should be encouraged to use the horn at critical points. They should also be looking in all possible directions by this stage and NOT placing any part of their anatomy outside the confines of the truck. (People tend to place their heads out in order to see the turning point of the truck).
