An AC is motor more compact than a DC version. By way of comparison check out the Toyota motors on the right. It is possible to take advantage of this more compact size by mounting the motor parallel to the drive axle instead of the conventional way which is at right angles to the axle. This moves the motor forward and leaves the space under the operator's seat clear.
See lowered traction battery and seat.
The picture on the left shows a Toyota AC motor mounted alongside the drive axle and connected directly to it.
On the next page it is possible to see some of the huge advantages of this system when it comes to locating the main traction battery.
